Finding the source of a public questionnaire; making a public questionnaire private

Finding the source of a public questionnaire; making a public questionnaire private

I am a Moodle administrator for a Moodle running 2.6. We have a number of public questionnaire that people have been using in the mistaken belief that they are template questionnaires. We would like to prevent this from happening in the future. While it is easy to see the content of the questionnaire by clicking its link in the list of public questionnaires, the preview does not make it apparent what course contains the questionnaire. How can we find the questionnaire of origin?

Also, what happens to questionnaire based on a public questionnaire when we make questionnaire that was public private?

Thank you,

Rebecca

HI Rebecca, thanks for your questions.

Question #1: How to locate the course where a public questionnaire was created that is used in other courses?

At the moment this is not possible, but it would be very useful indeed to admin or teachers. I'll try to come up with a solution ASAP.

Question #2: what happens to a questionnaire based on a public questionnaire when we make that public questionnaire private?

Strangely, nothing happens.

To answer your initial problem (teachers mistakenly creating "public" rather than "template" questionnaires", I see no solution for your present situation. It is not possible to "revert" a public questionnaire to a template or private status.

For the future, if you want to stop your teachers from creating public questionnaires, you may, as admin, set that capability to "Prevent" either at site or course level.

So would a questionnaire whose settings have been changed from public to private still be available as an option in the "public" list that appears when someone creates a new questionnaire, or would it become unavailable in that list and remain "public" to questionnaire that already use it as a source?

Good question, Rebecca!

"Would a questionnaire whose settings have been changed from public to private [...] (a) become unavailable in that list and (b) remain "public" to questionnaire(s) that already use it as a source?"

Yes! Would that solve your problem, then?

It wouldn't solve the problem completely, but it would at least allow us to stop the bleeding. We still need to be able to find the originals so that we can disable them and get the data for the instructors.

Hi Rebecca.

Further to this discussion I have added to the "public" questionnaires the "original course" and "copy course(s)" information on the Index page of the Activities block for the Questionnaire activity.

See Questionnaire_index_view for all the details.

I have also inserted this information in the questionnaire editing page, see Setting_up_a_questionnaire#Public_questionnaire_roll_out_to_multiple_courses.

At the moment this change is only available for version 2.6 downloaded from our github. I'm hoping to make it available from the Moodle official plugins repository any time soon.

Thank you for the update. This was very helpful. Questionnaire_index_view states:

When the Activities block is activated in a course which contains one or more questionnaire instances, clicking on the Questionnaire link in that block will display a list of all those questionnaire instances, with relevant information.

For courses where the activity block is not activated the following URL will allow users to access the information as well:  [YOUR Moodle's URL]/mod/questionnaire/index.php?id=[COURSE ID]
