When you say "an external file server managed through AD that each user has space on in their own folder", do you mean the network file system SMS/Samba, now called CIFS where each user has his own private space? Sorry, haven't encountered that before, can't see one in the core https://docs.moodle.org/en/Repositories either, except for https://docs.moodle.org/en/WebDAV_repository, if you can activate WebDAV in addition to CIFS.
