chatd

Hi All-

At UCSB we are seeing problems with chat causing server instability.  During finals week we disabled chat module to stabilize the server to make it usable.  We are exploring the use of chatd but ran into connection problem. Has anybody got chatd to run reliably as production service? If so, could you please let us know how it is setup to work reliably on your system.  Thanks.

Hi Ratana,

In case nobody replies to your question - my general advice is that the chat daemon is not getting much love these days and I would be hesitant about recommending it.

I'm just checking that you are using a php opcode cache (such as APC, opcache) - as i've experienced scalability problems with the chat daemon which were alleviated by just that. (Its not a magic bullet, but might help you in the meantime).

Hi Dan,

Thank you. That does help. I am exploring alternative option with phpfreechat as an external service to course site that wants to utilize chat for discussion session.
