We are using Moodle 2.5.3+. We have multiple instructors who are assigned to small groups of students in a class. There may be several instructors and several groups within the same class.
We have used SharePoint in the past to help instructors more easily find the assignments for the students they were assigned to. We created sub sites in SharePoint for each instructor and then gave each student their own folder under their assigned instructor to securely upload their assignments. All instructors have access to all of the student folders, but only the one student can see their one folder. It is very labor intensive to manage permissions and create the structure, many mistakes happen; we are looking for a way to duplicate this easily in Moodle.
I am confused also! I found something similar to what I need by way of the Mentees block. I was looking for a way to assign a group of students to a particular tutor. I wanted an easy pathway for the tutor to view only the students assigned to him/her and an easy access his/her students assignments.
Assign the students to their groups, and assign the tutor to the same groups. The tutor should then be able to pick just their group from the assignment grading page to download just the assignments for their group and grade just the assignments from their group.
Why use groups?
- You are a teacher in a course where you have several classes and you want to filter your activities and gradebook so you only see one class at a time.
- You are a teacher sharing a course with other teachers and you want to filter your activities and gradebook so you don’t see the students from your colleagues’ classes.
- You want to allocate a particular activity or resource to just one class or set of users and you don’t want others to see it. See Groupings.
