Gradebook: Correct averages

I do not know how to have correct averages in my gradebook. To enter grades, I go to my class, to the topic, and make sure that editing is on. Then I add an offline activity. I use all of the default options, with the exception of the grade. The grade depends on the activity. No grade is above a 100.

Currently, none of my student's averages are correct. For progress reports, I have had to export my grades into excel and perform my averages myself (total points earned/total possible points).

Why isn't moodle doing this simple average?

Hi Sarah,

You need to change your course gradebook settings.

On your course page, click on Grades in the Administration / Settings block
On the Grader Report page, click on the dropdown menu and click on Simple view under Categories and items Or (click on the Categories and items tab, if your grader report shows tabs view)
Choose preferred aggregation type from the dropdown list under Aggregation column

Hi Sarah,

After following Indira's instructions to select an aggregation, you want to select the aggregation, "Sum of Grades". This aggregation is set up so that each assignment is weighed according to the number of points you've assigned to it. For example, if you have four assignments and assignment 1 is worth 50 points, assignment 2 is worth 25 points, assignment 3 is worth 10 points, and assignment 4 is worth 15 points then assignment 1 is worth half the total grade (100), assignment 2 is worth one quarter or 25% of the grade and so forth. Then, if a student gets 88 points, s/he gets 88 percent.
