We're running Moodle 2.4.5 and have come across a peculiar issue. For some courses we cannot un-enrol users since there is no Enrolment method:
I investigated and found that those students have supposedly been suspended!? However, when I look at their profile there is no tick in the 'Suspended Account' tick box.
Any ideas how I could remove this user?

Perhaps you could try temporarily re-enabling the enrolment method, unenrolling the users and then re-disabling it?

When a user profile is suspended, it means he/she won’t be able to access the site. It’s not related with the user enrolment/un-enrolment.
I suggest you to enable the manual enrolment method for the course and then un-enrol the user from that particular course. After performing this, you can disable the manual enrolment for that course.

Helen, I did not disable an enrolment method and therefore can't enable it.
Dual Cube, thanks for the suspending clarification. We don't suspend users on our Moodle site and that's why I got confused.
The manual enrolment method is enabled. I was also informed that those accounts have been previously un-enrolled from the course.
This problem occurred after upgrading our Moodle page from 2.3.3 to 2.4.5.
Attached is an example that I produced in the database table mdl_enrol. The enrol column is empty for this user. Any ideas?
Check your enrolment methods in the course (course administration/users/enrolment methods) itself. I wonder if your enrolment method did not get disabled there by mistake.
There are only the main three enrolment methods.
And you have over 800 users in this course? Check that they are not hidden - hover over the eye and see what the popup says. Also, I noticed that the participants do not appear to have a role in the class. If the users have been suspended, perhaps go to their profile and unsuspend them and then see if you can unenrol them from the course.

Yes in this course there are that many students, but many more courses are affected that have far less students enrolled.
Not quite sure what you mean with 'Check they are not hidden'. Neither the students or the Enrolment methods have been hidden.
Bizarrely the 'Suspended account' tickbox in the users' profiles are not ticked and we have never suspended accounts before.
Could this have been a cohort enrollment maybe where the cohort got deleted?
I don't know if this will be helpful or not...it doesn't look exactly like what I've experienced...but close.
What I have seen that looked a bit like this involved use of third party plugins...my agency also uses the Face-to-Face module to allow students to register/book themselves for sessions (or teachers to register/book them). When the teacher registers/books students, the module displays all potential students in the site, including those who are not enrolled in the course, for possible registration/booking. If they register/book a non-enrolled student, it adds them to the enrollments area (manual enrollment) but without a role. If you un-register/book them, it leaves them on the enrolled users with no role. It is very strange. (I think the original F2F language is booking, but I've replaced it with registration in my language pack.)
Then, because the students don't have a role, sometimes you can't find them on the add/remove enrollments list. To get rid of them, you have to assign them a role and then remove them from manual enrollments. The thing that is different is that my enrolled users displays the enrollment type at the right corner and yours appears to have some sort of icon/image. It may be my theme displays differently than yours.
