Thanks Thomas for all of your help.  I'm sure your suggestion was on the money...but since I am never known to sit still too long.....here is what I ended up doing and it is working:

I installed SimplyMepis 3.3.1 and scrapped the Redhat 9.  They sent me a message saying it was End of Life for that product anyway.  Next I uninstalled the Apache that comes with Mepis because there was no mysql with it anyway etc. and I didn't want a conflict with XAMPP which I was getting before I think.  Then I downloaded and installed XAMPP.....viola...everything is working!  I have Moodle up and running.  I really like this SimplyMepis distribution.  I'm new to Linux, but it seems to have very nice app and other items installed.

Now....I'm going to tinker with getting it so my Windows machines can login to moodle.   Any suggestions there?

Thanks again for your assistance.  If there is anyway I can return the favour please let me know.

Take care,

Mark
