Tried to send you an email but failed!

Hello all,

Moodle 2.2.5+ (Build: 20120920)

We are experiencing intermittent issues when setting up email notifications for self-registered users ( Email-based self-registration).

we do not have any SMTP set up, we use the Moodle internal email engine.

when the user fills up the form to self register and submit it, the following error is displayed to her/him:

Tried to send you an email but failed!

Moodle should send the user an email to validate the just-created account but it cannot send it.

Initially we thought it was due to some issues with the host provider, but then we established it is not in fact a simple PHP script works just fine.

Playing with Moodle settings both inour DEV and Production site we managed to get it working and we thought the issue was that the reply email address had to be assigned to the same domain as the moodle installation.

However more tests did not confirm and we are now pretty stuck with this, we do not know exactly how to proceed to investigate it further.

Could anybody suggest any troubleshooting step (for instance what about the email debugging? etc)

Thanks in advance

Imbu

Anybody able to provide any input on this?

This is becoming critical to us, we are unable to proceed if we do not resolve this....

at least any trick to use alternative SMTP set up...

Thanks

Imbu

Group Particularly helpful Moodlers

Sorry,

I am not familar with this side of Moodle.  It is my understanding that a SMTP server needs to be set up for the emails to go out, but I could be entirely wrong. Here are some links that might help till someone else responds.

Re: Tried to send you an email but failed!

Thanks Paula,

I managed to set it up by using SMTP but the only problem is that I had to put the system name of the email server not just the mail server host name.

just to give you an example:

1] mx1.xxxx.com and mx2.xxxx.com these are the MX records applied to each domain name under our customers accounts. These two hosts associate the host with our mail server.
2] mail.xxxx.com - this is the mail server host.
3] mail5.us.yyyyy.co - this is the system name of the mail server.

Support from my ISP helped me resolve the issue.

Having said that, I am still fighting with some bizarre behaviour regarding email notifications...

one teacher is regurarily notified, the others, God knows why, not at all...

ouch.. moodle sometimes is more criptic then geroglifics...!
