I had a similar problem with my site setup; my moodle is hosted behind a load balancer and the two servers were having a system time difference of about a minute between them. A quick # ntpdate -s <timeserver> in each machine solved all my chat problems.
It's a good idea to put that command in a daily or weekly cron job.
