I'm having the same problem with chats. I've noticed a number of forum threads similar to this with no one being able to offer a solution, it seems. I would be really grateful for any suggestions. Did you resolve this Pooja?

I am also having the same problem on Moodle 2. How it can be fixed? Did anyone find a solution?
In my case, it wasn't a server or code problem/error. Check if your Chat configuration is properly set up, I mean, the values are not 0. I put the default values and it worked for me.
In our situation, our server time was off by 10 minutes (it was running 10 minutes slow), so it assumed that users had timed out and was automatically disconnected them. So in the module settings (Site Admin -> Plugins -> Activity modules -> Chat), I extended the time out time to 120 seconds and then reset the server time. Worked like a charm after that. The default time for disconnecting users is 35 seconds, so if your server time is manually set and it's off by even a small margin, it could be forcing users off the chat. Extending the time for disconnecting should resolve that issue.
I had a similar problem with my site setup; my moodle is hosted behind a load balancer and the two servers were having a system time difference of about a minute between them. A quick # ntpdate -s <timeserver> in each machine solved all my chat problems.
It's a good idea to put that command in a daily or weekly cron job.
just to let you know... In my case the problem was due to web server. Changing hosting was a solution.
finally get the solution.
May i know what is the solution?
I would check your server time and the web server time.
