Forum subscription, opting out and forcing back in

If a forum has an optional subscription initially, and students/staff opt out. How can they be forced back in if it becomes important for them to receive emails about something?

I am unsure how to experiment to work this out (and busy), so if anyone knows, please let me know.

At the moment a student's preference trumps a teacher's setting. There is a tracker -- as yet unresolved -- to make a change at:

https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-29663

There are counter-arguments, but to judge by the discussion so far, it seems like it has a fair chance of getting incorporated. You can add your vote to it if it's important to you.

Thank you Kevin, and please forgive my ignorance. I am unsure that these issues are related. The read tracking has been disabled on our Moodle instance, and the tracker instance is about that. Is that right?

What I am concerned about is if the subscription is initially set as optional, and students unsubscribe, is it possible to re-subscribe them. Surely changing the settings will not pull the students back in?
