I made the changes as you suggested and things work fine.

The only problem now is that I've changed the index.php files in both the user and admin directories so that names are listed in alphabetical order according to users 'lastnames'. So, now western names are ordered by family name (=last name) and Japanese names are ordered by given name (=last name), whereas they should be ordered by their family names (=firstname).

This is a minor problem, and since most of my users will be Japanese people I will change things so that Western names also have family names as 'firstname'.
