We are trying to figure out how to force subscribe a group to a forum without subscribing all of the other users in the course (instructors, content assistants, etc.). We have the forum set to group mode and assigned only the group that we want to have the email notifications, but it still subscribes and notifies all users.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

We resolved it as follows:

"Let me clarify confusion about Force subscription. Subscription is the feature that sends ALL posts from a forum to ALL course users. It does not recognize groups. ALL posts in a forum go to ALL course users, always. There is NO way for a group to receive via email ONLY the posts of others in his/her group.
This means that forums must be checked manually be students, since they will not be receiving email notification of a new forum post.
So, if you are using Separate Groups in a Forum, set Force everyone to be subscribed to 'Subscriptions not allowed'.
In my opinion it should work in another way as I discribed in the tracker/simon
Boy, I really think it ridiculous that is impossible to subscribe a group to a forum.
@Simon what do you mean by "a general forum for each group"? You create the forum and then give it the setting "Separate groups"? Or do you create a separate forum for each group? In that case you wouldn't have to subscribe them individually.

don´t do that everyone in the course will be a subscriber. Simon

It seems that the NG Forum developed by the OU solves this problem. Have you tried this already?
How do you create a forum for each group? I'm a beginner...
I just figured out the answer to my question…
Just came across this post seeking answers to the same question - along the way, discovered groupings works. Just select the grouping you want notifications to go to, and make it available for group members only... seems to work for me
