My issue wasn't that it was running too long, it was that I triggered an automatic backup inadvertently and wanted to stop it before we ran out of disk space. In the past (prior to 3x) I could disable the automatic back up once it had started by simply disabling it (as above) but this didn't seem to work anymore. I ended up killing the PHP process.
