Craig, the reason it is displayed this way is that Algebra filter doesn't actually display those math exressions. It just lets you to use simple syntax, which is then transformed into TeX syntax, which you see in result.
To make it look like actual math expression, please turn TeX filter on (which is done at same place as for Algebra filter).
