Preventing outsiders from enrolling

Hi there,

My moodle 2.5.1 site has e-mail enrollment, and in the last year or so I've found an increasing number of people from other countries enrolling. They can't get in, since I have enrollment keys for all my courses, but its becoming annoying.

Could somebody tell me who these outsiders are, and why they would bother to attempt to enroll in my courses? Are they generated by bots or something? To me it seems a complete waste of time and resources...

More importantly, how can I prevent this from happening? It's not serious but it is bugging me.

Many thanks for taking your time to answer these questions - I do search, but only rarely do I seem to find effective keywords for finding the answers I want.

Hi David,

Just checking you've gone through the list of options for when you allow self-registration in Reducing spam in Moodle? Currently these are all the ways we have for limiting self-registration.

If it's any consolation, moodle.org also has tons of users who are not enrolled in any course - people just create accounts in order to have a profile page, or tags, or something else... but don't leave any spam, so their accounts are not detected. I guess they just need to learn a bit more about Moodle to realise their actions are pointless!

Thanks for that. I now know I'm doing all I can do. I will follow the suggestion and turn off e-mail registration after a week or two.
