Meta-linking, groups and groupings

We have course home pages in Moodle and the course units are connected to the course home page by using the META-linking enrolment method. This means students that enrol in the course are auto-enrolled in the linked units. Simple enough so far.

Now there are (campus) Groupings in the course home page (different content for a couple of different campuses) and that all works fine, students go into a campus group using an enrolment key (enrolment method: Self-enrolment) and those groups are in groupings... but then when we go to the unit page/course (enrolment method META-link) , it appears the groups and groupings do not auto-populate (perhaps because of the different enrolment method) and the groups and groupings need to be created in each unit and users added to groups manually after they have accessed the unit to enable them to then access campus specific resources. Not good.

Does anyone have a solution for the above issue?

Options as I see them

  1. Forget meta-linking and use the group enrolment key for the course landing page and all of the units (students have to keep entering enrolment key)
  2. Forget meta-linking and go back to the all in one course using clever design to reduce scrolling through unit contents
  3. Keep the meta-linking and manually add students to groups in every unit (laborious and clunky - teachers have enough other stuff to work out)
  4. Set up an elaborate system where material is restricted based on a field in the user profile (no thanks!)
