The point of this wasn't to benchmark our infrastructure but to use the same system as a comparison point to get these numbers. I have much more control over my own machine vs. one our production environments. The configuration files for MySQL and some PHP settings are similar to what we run on our production Moodles, though.
The main reason is the ability to use MacPorts to have standard MySQL (i.e. Oracle's version), Percona MySQL and MariaDB all installed and switch which one is supplying "mysqld" on my system with a single command and a service restart.
