Hi and Welcome to the Themes forum,
Sounds like you are just playing at Moodle, as I did when I first started to learn more about Moodle and its themes. So to this end I would first need to know which version of Moodle you are playing with so I can walk you through some of the steps and try and avoid the pitfalls you seem to have fallen into?
