Also "Custom HTML" are good, you can use them for uploading images or text as you need to. Nice for links to things that you use at school.

I wouldn't say they're any blocks to stay away from, it depends what you want to use. Also have a think about the "My Moodle" page, a lot of users may use that so you may want to think about what you want to let them do there.

I think you will find it is very dependent on what you have going on in your course .

Outside of the Navigation and Administration/Settings block, I use:

• Activities block so students can get a quick look at due dates
• Calendar block so they can see a broader view
• Upcoming events block to help them see what is due in the next 14 days (this can be set)
• Online users to assist with communication
• Messages to see unread messages
• HTML block with my personal information and contact info
• Search forums so students can search for forum postings
• Course completion status for a broad overview of what has been completed and what needs to be completed

I would recommend just playing with them to see what works best for your application.
