is there a way for me to modify the contents of the navigation block besides that settings contained within the options bar and the site admin feature?, for example i want to remove the blogs and my badges subtabs from under the my profile tab.
Disable those features at the site level (Advanced Features). The Navigation block can be tricky to modify as each link and menu is generated by different processes. Some items you can get rid of simply by disabling the feature. Others can be hidden with CSS. But a few items have to be commented out in the code to remove them.
