I've been waiting for an opportunity to show off the work I've been doing for our college's new/updated VLE. Couldn't find a way to attach the screenshots (too many/too large) so had to use Dropbox. These are some shots from the teacher view..
We're not launching until September so there's still a little bit of development left but most of it is finished now. There is a theme, course format and several updated blocks and plugins. So far I have managed not to have to update any of the core code
We wanted to separate out some of the content, especially the assignments and resources, in order to avoid the scroll of death. It doesn't seem to matter how well organised you are, there seems to be a threshold where after adding resources, links, assignments and other activities something is going to be buried in the middle of the page and students will find it hard to locate.
So here's a brief description of our custom course format...
The Course Information page is pretty much your normal Moodle topics layout.
Using the Legacy Course Files area for the course (to replace the old files area from Moodle 1.9 - not sure I'm fully happy with losing it) I have been able to construct a Resources area so that teachers only have to upload files into there and they will instantly be available on the course. If they need to make light of particular files then they can also add them to the Course Information page.
Assignments are pulled onto their own page now too, so although they still need to be added into a section on the Course Information page (which can be hidden) the Assignments page will display all the assignments in one pace, it also acts as a basic gradebook (when viewed as a student).
The Social Stream and Reading List are currently being developed, although I'm hoping to have them in place for September - although time is ticking away!
