I'm a long time moodler who runs his own Moodle installation for my college courses. Recently I decided to try issuing badges to students, and opted to try Credly rather than wait for Moodle 2.5's badge support.
If anyone else is interested, my solution involves installing a small PHP script to your Moodle server which issues the badge through Credly's "Open Credit API". The URL resource in Moodle does the work of directing students to the script, appending the appropriate parameters (name & email), and displaying the confirmation message (which appears seamless if you use the Embed option for the URL Resource).

If interest is sufficient or others want to join the project, I'd be happy to consider building this out into a full Moodle add-on. For the time being I'm just offering it as a quick and easy way to issue badges for interested Moodle admins / teachers.
