I immediately think of Jaffas, M&M's and Maltisers.

But for developers, can it work with pizza?  Of has the profession become more health consicious.

Who are these guys?  This is a slick, well crafted video.

Pizza? I think it would depend on how wide you can open your mouth.

I'd like to make them obligatory in exams.

Replace the popcorn with paint balls, and interface it with the CI Server, you break the build, you get painted.

I would have thought that it would work with anything small and light enough to fit through the firing mechanism.  So suicidal 'Jelly Tots' are on the cards.

Looking at their website - http://www.popcornindiana.com/popinator-project - it is activated by the word 'pop' so perhaps a media player recording activated by the cron job in 'cron.php'.
