It is not possible to manually grade randomly shuffled essay questions. When question e.g. five is selected for grading all the responses that appear are to the question that each student got as number 5 - not the actual number 5 question in the question pool/bank.

Are you getting to the essay questions by going to Navigation -> click on the triangle in front of the quiz/exam -> click on the triangle in front of reports -> select the manual grading link -> see the essay questions listed individually -> click on the link under the To Grade column -> then sort them in order of the student -> grade them and then go back to the list for the next question?
