Thanks. I'm not a super programmer but I can handle code and am fairly comfortable with the Moodle directory. That being said, I'm not sure what I need to add to discuss.php  I guess I would add the html5 code that is provided by Facebook...?

As for the html block, I can't seem to get that to work. I've tried adding one to the front page and adding my like button code to it but it gets stripped every time I add it and also that doesn't seem that it would add (if I could get it to work) a button to each news post.

I managed to solve it adding the following code to mod/forum/lib.php (around row 3605):

This code however will need to be patched on each Moodle update.

Is there a way to move this to installation-specific files, like the theme ?
