You say you renamed the folder not to clash - but have you made sure you rename the theme everywhere else - language file, version.php, config.php and anywhere else it may be named? I don't have aardvark magpie downloaded on my work computer to check exactly where else, but tools like Notepad++ or if you're on Linux a bash command such as the one here can help.
