YouTube Assignment Submission Type
Group Particularly helpful Moodlers

I just submitted a new assignment submission type to the add-ons database. It allows students to record or upload directly to YouTube from within a Moodle assignment.

The development of the plugin was funded by Global Awakening , and they were happy donate it back to the community.

It will be a few weeks until it goes live on Moodle.org. If anyone wants to try it out in the meantime, it can be downloaded from:

( Make sure you read the documentation. )

Great! Thanks everyone for the feedback. It has all been positive so far and no real glitches.

There is more good news too. We now have funding to make two new mods to integrate YouTube recording/uploading in Moodle. There will be a YouTube repository courtesy of Moodle Japan, and a YouTube Editor Sub Plugin (ie an icon on the HTML editor) courtesy of Joe Thibault from Moodle News.

Look out for those in April.

Re: YouTube Assignment Submission Type

Good News, looking forwards to that two mods. I was trying to use your PoodLL database field, the video field can record, but in LIST view and SINGLE view, just show a link as:

oodll: {POODLL:type=video,path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dct.aut.ac.nz%2Fmoodle%2Fpluginfile.php%2F57%2Fmod_data%2Fcontent%2F8%2F604668545536697.flv,protocol=http,embed=false,embedstring=clicktopla

If you can have the 2 new mods done, then we don't need this field any more.

 Thanks

Hi William,

We solved this off thread, but for anyone else. William's problem was not the YouTube assignment, but the Activity Name Auto Linking filter was trying to link the word POODLL in the filter string to a page resource he had created titled, "PoodLL" . So Moodle couldn't parse the filter string correctly.

Just be careful when using the Activiity Name Auto Linking filter, not to do that.

I think you will still want a PoodLL Database Activity fields even when the YouTube editor is available. YouTube can't do it all, and it is actually blocked by my school's grim firewall/proxy. Besides it is nice to have a recorder right there in the spot where the student is supposed to record. So a YouTube field might be a good mod for the future.

Re: YouTube Assignment Submission Type

Dear Justin,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply and clear instruction. I disabled that not-in-use filter and all PoodLL plugins works perfectly!

After I found your fantastic PoodLL, I believe that you have bought the Moodle up to a different level, which no any other LMS can compete. You make the Moodle not just a text-book teaching tool, it is a Multimedia teaching tool as well!

Yes, I agree, the 'YouTube everywhere' won't replace the PoodLL, because the PoodLL Database field is unique and its usage is unlimited. Also, the PoodLL widgets and  PoodLL repository, I love all PoodLL plugins.

Thank you very much again.

The YouTube Assigment is now live on the plugins/addons section of Moodle.org

https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=assignsubmission_youtube

If you are interested in even deeper integration with YouTube, there are two other projects underway. A repository integration and a "YouTube Anywhere" integration. More info on the latter, and the crowdfunding model, is at Moodle News.

Dear Justin,

Our staff already use the mod to collect video assignment. They love it.

But, they want more.

In assignment setting, we can setup a file upload and define more than one files.

Can we allow more than one video to upload?

Thanks

Hi William

At this stage "no." The YouTube assignment just accepts one video. But Brian from Global Awakening who originally commissioned the mod has asked for the same thing. So it sounds like something we will have to do.

I am just finishing up two other YouTube mods and trying to keep the logic as generic as possible. After that is done, we can come back on this. If you are in a pinch the new YouTube Anywhere mod will allow you to add multiple YouTube vids to an html area.

Justin

Thank you for the work on making recording and uploading video easier in Moodle. Since I work at a residential school for the deaf, these functions make Moodle a lot more useful to my teachers and students. My question is about the Youtube Assignment Submission plugin. What prevents Moodle from using a school or teacher master account when a student records and uploads a video directly into Youtube?

Hi Michael

You can use a master YouTube account for uploading video with the YouTube submission.  And since that is also the way mobile/tablet users record video, they can record video directly using a master YouTube account.

The main problem  with recording via a PC webcam and and the YouTube submission, is that the YouTube API simply gives you no option to use a master account login for the webcam recorder.  Unlike the rest of the API, the login in process is baked into the webcam recorder.

It would be possible to bounce around this issue by recording and uploading via, for example, the PoodLL video recorder. And then from the server uploading that recorded video to YouTube. And maybe we could look at that. But you would lose some of the simplicity of the current solution.

For younger learners,  I can see requiring the YouTube login to be a bit of a hurdle. For older learners however I think logging in independently(not via a master account) is probably the best way.

A (laborious and not secure) workaround, would be to walk around the room before the class and log each browser into YouTube with the "master" account. Then since the YouTube session would be active, your students would not see the login dialog.
