We are a Windows shop, and we use HP Data Protector for our server-level backups:

We have been hosting 1.9 on Server 2003 with SQL 2005, so I can't speak directly to 2008R2 restores yet, but it has worked great to restore on 2003/SQL Server 2005 for other systems.  With the HP DP SQL license we can backup at both the OS and database level SQL server without taking anythign offline, and we usually just restore the database itself instead of the whole server.

We just started running a new 2.3 server on 2008R2 with SQL Server 2008 and are using HP DP to back it up, also.  I'm hoping we don't have to find out how well it restores with 08R2, as we usually can get what we need from the indidivual course backups.
