Limit quiz statistics to Last Attempt?

Limit quiz statistics to Last Attempt?

Hi,

Is it possible to limit quiz question statistics to the last attempt?  We often run quizes in which we allow students multiple attempts, but we really only care about their responses on the last attempt.  In particular, to judge how a large class has fared on each question, it's useful to go to the statistics for each question, which has a table showing the number of responses for each answer choice.  (As an aside, a histogram of this data would be much more useful.)  In this case, you really only want to see the last responses of the students.

Thanks in advance for your replies,

-Steve

This is not currently possible. At the moment the statistics can only do first attempt or all attempts.

We will be doing some enhancements to the statistics this year, and hopefully we can add more options for what is analysed.

I'm glad to hear that enhancememts are on the way.  Are there particular feature requests or proposals that we can vote for?

The thing that is driving this what the OU wants, specifically:

  • In Interacitve and Adaptive behaviour, analyse all the responses a student submitted, not just the final one.
  • For question types with random variants within one question (e.g. calculated*, varnumeric* and STACK) provide statictics and analysis broken down by variant, as well as overall (like we do with Moodle random questions).

If there are other things that are easy to do, then we will probably try to do them as part of the same bit of work. So, mention your ideas here.

+1 for Steve's proposal.

Here's how I think of it.  We want to see how many people "got it right". That's a different question from how many people "got it right the first time".    As grade can based on either the highest attempt or the last attempt, I'd think the same would apply here -if you're grading the last attempt, you want to know how each question affected grades, so we'd want to know how many people got the question wrong on the attempt that "counts" for the grade.

Any question that is answered incorrectly far too often, bringing down people's grades, needs to be revewed to possibly improve the question.

Of course the trouble with that is that students are quite capabile of working out which answer to a multiple choice question gets them full marks, even if the question is faulty and they have to select the wrong answer to do so. Thus, 'Final attempt' marks may not reveal bad question.

However, it is a valuable option ot have, alongside first attempt, best attempt and all attempts.
