Hello there. You mean your Moodle site is only on your Windows computer and not anywhere online? In that case you don't need an FTP program. Just find your Moodle folder on your computer and copy/paste the unzipped theme into the folder called theme
I have the new theme in the theme file. I actually did that before looking at FTP as it seemed the logical thing to do. Unfortunately I can't see it when I open site administration - appearance - theme selector. This is my theme file at the moment.
Hi Kimberly, as you are working in the local machine, your PC, then you can do everything you need as far as updating, adding themes and plugins, upgrading your Moodle version, replacing damaged files, through Windows Explorer. To use these things in Moodle, you usually only need to log into your Moodle and Moodle automatically updates. Sometime,s like with themes you have to manage them yourself in your Administrator's role. You sometimes do not even need to log out of Moodle to make the updates, but it is better policy to do it than to be lazy and not logout.
To update your theme is usually simple, as Mary has already suggested, copy the them into the themes folder and then log into the Moodle. Go to the page
Home > Site administration > Appearance > Themes > Theme selector
This is where you can begin to change your theme. First, click on "Clear Theme caches". Themes will not change when they are stored in the cache, so this is the most likely thing that is happening and why it does not change. Go to "Select Theme" and click, and the theme you want will appear, or should appear. Select it and again, you should not have to, but I usually log out, close the window, open it again, log in to the new theme. (This is precautionary only - or meets the demands of my paranoia pick one.)
2 things you may need to do - first visit Site Administration>Notifications to make sure the theme is properly installed - if nothing comes up there then the second thing to check is that the permissions are correct on the folder. I have sometimes found copying folders onto my Windows machine that they get copied with no read permissions for the folder preventing Moodle recognising it.
If that all works fine then krystle should appear in your theme selector with no problems. Click on the 'Change Theme' button next to the default theme and krystle should be in the list there.
Richard is quite right, when copying-pasting folders in Windows, make sure that your role is an Administrator - Widows own "security" prevents you from doing basic things sometimes. And it is easy to get complacent, sometimes you do need to visit the Notifications page, for plugins and upgrades, but I cannot remember doing so when updating a theme.... mmm.
Did you fix this issue, Kimberly? And keep cool in PA...
