Migration from single box to 2-tier architecture

Dear Moodlers,

Until now we had moodle installation in one box. The h/w is old and users have gone up, hence migrating to 2-tier architecture. Web server in one and application and DB in another box. If anybody on this foum has done it before, pls share "how to" for same. Thanks!

Re: Migration from single box to 2-tier architecture

A simple way is to just set up the db on the other machine, and modify config.php by substituting the host name 'localhost' with e hostname that points to the db machine.

Maybe db machine needs to be configured in a way to accept external connections.

For that google "site:serverfault.com configure db to accept external connections"

Operating system is GNU/Linux or other?  DB is MySQL?

It is a matter of giving the following variables correct values:
$CFG->dbtype
$CFG->dblibrary
$CFG->dbhost
$CFG->dbname
$CFG->dbuser
$CFG->dbpass
$CFG->prefix
$CFG->dboptions

Thanks Viswanath! As always you offered inputs promptly and timely.

Further clarification- Our two tier structure is as follows

1. Web tier (for redirecting. Web server is on separate host)

2. App+DB tier (app and db resides on same host)

Existing MOODLE (1.9) site/set up will be migrated as it is.

Upgraded to latest versions of PHP (5.3.3 from 5.2.9), MySQL (5.1.61 from 5.1.30), Apache (2.2.15 from 2.2.13).

Visvanath Sir, what is thedifference between old httpd.conf and new httpd.conf? Pls educate us if there are nay changes.

Regards!

Sorry, I don't understand. It sounds to me like a load balencer setup with many identical machines, all running the webserver and the database server. In that case my advice earlier does not apply. I was talking about _one_ machine running Apache and another the database server.

If it is about clustering, you might want to shift the discussion to the "Hardware and Performance" forum. Sent a message to the moderator.

Highly adviced. "One change at a time."

Unless you are talking about going from Apache 1 to 2, there is no change in the Apache configuration for what I had in mind.

P.S. About the duplicate "Thank you" note: It is better to rate the post http://docs.moodle.org/24/en/Moodle.org_forums_Code_of_Conduct#Provide_feedback_for_others.

P.P.S. I have unsubscribed myself from this forum.

Re: Migration from single box to 2-tier architecture

To add to above question:

1. Do we need to install MOODLE again, even if we are migrating same MOODLE version 1.9 to new server?

2. Pls tell me about the changes we need to do, during migration process?

3. We have already installed latest version of PHP,MySQL,Apache on new server. But we want to retain same version of MOODLE 1.9 on new server with all old customization.

4. Kindly share the step by step procedure.

5. Our new architecture is given in the diagram above

All the MOODLERS, pls reply.

Thanks in advance
