How to add video that can both stream and download?

Hi Moodlers,

We post .wmv files for students as a maor component of their course.  I have been posting these to display 'in pop-up'.  Previously I thought they were able to also, with IE, right click and save as to save the target file.  Now with 2.3.2 the browser only wants to save a view.php file, not the target.

I have had poor results embedding .wmv files.

I would like for students to have the opportunity to both stream and download these files.

What is the best method to attain this?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul,

If you want to streem and download video, I'd suggest you convert the .wmv files to html5 recognizable formats: mp4, ogv, webm. They can easily be embedded in resources, played natively in browsers (without additional flash players) and downloadable at the same time.

The coverter I use for video is Miro Video converter (Win, Mac and Linux): http://www.mirovideoconverter.com

Cheers

Stan

Stan,

Thank you for the suggestion.

I found that the php handler doesn't stream well, and eventually just post to YouTube and embedd.  They play much better.

I zip and post the video files for download as a separate item.

Not a perfect solution, but seems to work to the students satisfaction.
