Chat has the ability to draw students to our moodle but also the ability to get me in trouble when they are on it during lessons and I get phone calls from the teaching staff calling all sorts of names!!
What I'd like is to be able to turn chat on during dinners times and after school.
Is this at all feasible?

Is it possible to contact your nearest Moodle partner and get them to knock up a code hack to do this for you? If you keep it simple, it should be a fairly quick and straight forward job for an experienced Moodle coder.
I notice that there is an enhancement request for this feature in bug tracker (item 2121)
