timyMCE stripping tags

Hello everybody. Part of the tinyMCE editor checks and validates HTML, which in principle is fine. However, in some cases it's a real pain, because it strips out what it thinks are invalid tags, even though I want them to be there. For example, you can't include a <p> tag inside a <span>. Now, I know that this isn't great html, but there are good reasons why I want to do it. I also have trouble with applet tags.

I'm sure that somewhere in the tinyMCE code there must be a way of switching this kind of thing off, or at least modifying it.  However, I've had a good look and I can't find it. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Chris
