This is not a problem that I'm having myself. I announced the new HotPot module in the Spanish Moodle forum and there are people who are installing it and are experiencing some problems. I guess some of them do not feel comfortable enough with English so they are addressing their questions to me. The problem is I don't know how to answer them.
OK, I enclose a screen capture that was sent to me. Has anybody got this kind of error? What is this person doing wrong? Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
I'll let this person know about this. In fact, it looks like this might be the problem since he told me he was using PHP 4.1.2.
I have amended the update script to use the workaround for missing "get_file_content" function suggested on the PHP site (http://jp2.php.net/function.file-get-contents)
The amended script is attached it to this message and has also been included in the zipped download of the module available from here:
Thanks for liasing with the Spanish Moodle forum. I will try to find the message you reported and post the amended update script there too.
P.S. Thank you Zbigniew for pin-pointing the cause of the problem.
The questions have been addressed to me via personal mail. So, you won't find them in the Spanish Moodle forum. You are welcome to browse the forums there if you want to get some practice with your Spanish, though .
I forgot to ask you about one thing. Am I right to assume that with the amended update script this person will be able to run the HotPot module without having to upgrade his PHP? If so, could you tell me what he has to do to correct the problem? Is it simply a matter of copying the update_to_v2.php into some folder? Thanks again!
you have it exactly. If you put the amended update script in the "moodle/mod/hotpot/db" folder, you should be able to update the HotPot module without needing to upgrade PHP.
Please let us know how you get on.
all the best
P.S. I had a look at the Spanish moodle but couldn't make head or tail of it. I've started greeting people at work with a cheery "hola" though, so it some good
Thanks for the info. I'll let you know whether this person that asked me for help managed to solve the problem.
I am the person with the problem, and I will follow your instructions and let you know if it works.
what do yo recomend to me?, to copy the file with the amended upadte script in the moodle/mod/hotpot/db folder, upgrade my PHP version or both things.
I will try to do both things step by step.

I have installed the amended hotpot module and now everything works fine.
The only thing I did, till now, was to download the new amended module of Gordon and install it in my moodle server.
Now I am testing this new Hot Potatoes module and It seems to work fine and much better than the older one.
Thanks again to both of you for helping me and for your good work

thanks very much for the feedback. It is great to hear the upgrade to "HotPot v2" was successful and the new module is working well for you.
Thanks too for your kind offer to translate the module's messages and help files into Spanish. It would be a marvellous addition. The files to be translated are in the "moodle/mod/hotpot/lang" folder. Please send them over to me (gordon at-sign kanazawa hyphen gu dot ac dot jp) and I will include them in the zipped download of the module
You asked earlier about upgrading your PHP version. This is not necessary in order to run Moodle and the HotPot module. However, if your Moodle site is publically accessible, it would be a good idea to arrange to upgrade to PHP 4.3.x at some convenient time in the future, because there are several security problems with earlier versions of PHP.
all the best
Thanks to you for your good and fast work. I reported the problem last sunday and you fixed it on monday. Really impressive.
As soon as I have the translations into spanish I will send it to you. I already started with the translation, but I'm not as fast as you are
Now, my next step is to upgrade my PHP to 4.3.x
Thanks again for your advice.

thank you so much for translating the HotPot messages and help files. I have added them to the module and added "Spanish" to the demo site (http://bateson.kanazawa-gu.ac.jp/moodle/course/view.php?id=12&lang=es) so that folks can see it in action.
I noticed just one phrase which was skipped over and that was the phrase "The responses are color-coded as follows: " in the file "lang/es/help/hotpot/responsestable.html". If you could kindly translate this phrase and send it over, I will add it to the Spanish language pack for the module.
Also, I have realized that several of the links in the original English files referred to the "hotpotatoes" module, instead of the "hotpot" module. I have corrected the links in both the English and Spanish versions and included them in the module download.
Once again many, many thanks for making this module accessible to Spanish speakers everywhere!
