Multiple Language Content Options

I'm tryign to get an idea of options for deliverying courses in 2 languages. I know for basic content I can use the <span lang="XX" class="multilang" option to deliver the appropriate lanuage content to a user. But this has a lot of limitations (i.e. does not work) when you are delivering more advanced content with different HTML tags and formatting.

So, I am wondering what others are doing, both in terms of the course area and the quizzes.

Are you simply providing the 2 lanaguages together in a topic?

Are you separtating Topic's based on Language and users simply select the Topic they wish?

Do you have a quiz for language x and different quix for language y?

Am I missing any potential options?

One option you don't mention is having two parallel courses, one in each language, with language for each course locked. If desired, courses can be cross-linked for all or just for instructors.

Thanks for the quick response. Yes, but that would mean managing two separate courses. I guess if I have to I will.

I was able to find out a partial solution to some limitations with this approach in http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-31531 . Basically my Enter english text tags were being stripped out of the moodle editor. So disabling this editor in my profile and simply using HTML form editor solved the issue. Have not tested it on all my content but most of the numeric sections and indented sections are all working as expected.

Just need to figure out how to manage it for quizzes. I suspect I will not be as lucky and will have to go with 2 differents quizzes (one for each language).

Actually. Four our purposes it would seem I can simply use the option in the quiz question and answers.

Hi Peter,

I am in a similar situation like yours, trying to vary content based on language. Did this solution worked for you in Quiz?

If yes, did you have to do anything special to make it work?

Above solution works for us in Courses but when we use the same solution in quizz it doesnt work. It shows both English and Spanish content

Appreciate any help here.

Well, yes, you have to weight the extra effort to maintain two courses against easier editing of all materials and activities. Throw student population and course presentation into the equation as well before making decisions. No approach is intrinsically better than the other, so you need to figure out what suits your situation best.

There is an improvement of multilanguage filter MDL-32257 which makes it possible to use <div lang="XX" class="multilang"> tags and embed any other html tags within them.

To use this improvement you have to download this file and copy it in filter/multilang folder of your moodle instalation.

Please vote for MDL-32257 improvement in Moodle Tracker.

We create a course for each language. Also, be aware that Moodle will allow you to export and import quiz text as an xml file. This is very handy when doing translations in reducing copy paste, copy paste.

Thanks Scott. Our content however is already translated in a word document so there will be cut & paste for 9 courses no matter which option.

We're set up using Topic's within the courses, so I guess I could simply use the lang tag for the topic section and then create a "page" resource within the topic for each language. Then create a category for each language in the question bank and assign it to the language specific quiz....

Not sure of the net benefit of this versus what you have done and create a separate course for each lanaguage...separtate courses certainly lends itself to be more friendly in future upgrades.
