Is there a way to automatically import assessment items into a checklist in a meta course set up

Simple answer: no. The checklist code does not include anything to do with meta courses.
I guess it wouldn't be that difficult to write (just point the existing 'import' code at a different course), but not something I'm going to be looking at any time soon.
