Moodle 1.9 Urgent Help Required - Running slow then quick then not at all.

Moodle Version: 1.9.16

Hi

We have been using moodle for a few years and all of a sudden today it has started not working. It keeps running really quick for about 15 seconds and then horiffically slow for a while. (taking minutes to load a page)

We have restarted iis 7 and restarted MySQL and restarted the server. 

We keep noticing spikes in the SQL traffic and number of SQL queries. We have not made any changes before it started doing this, this morning. 

We have an SQL backup from last night that we could restore if people think that could fix it?

Any ideas?

check your iis access logs to see if there is anything of note then check your database logs

It maybe that somone is uploading a large file, and keeps trying.  Access logs might tell you

We have a limit of 16mb for uploads and cant see anything in the access logs.

The SQL database logs only show that the innodb was shutdown and started when we restarted the server.

It started working again yesterday and then today is doing the same thing now. Any other ideas?
