Roles and permissions

Using 2.3.1 a user role was set at category level to allow some support staff to be able to see the content of all the courses in the category - a Read Only role. This worked well until staff began to use groups/groupings. Now this Read Only role is unable to see the contents of any topic/ resource/ activity that is restricted by a Grouping. Is there a setting in the role that can be used to provide this read view within Groupings
