I'm interested in a strategy for offering a reading-only course, customized for each student. The students are required to read 2000 pages and choose the books they want to read. I want the students to provide the name of the book and number of pages and then report each week on where they are at. Ideally, the student will be able to see their progress (percentage bar or graphs) as they go along. Anything automated is a plus as this can easily be done in a google spreadsheet, but the results are not ideal.
I've thought about using the quiz module and asking the student each book name/isbn and number of pages read out of the total pages, then passing that percentage into the gradebook which, in turn, updates a completion bar.
I know that using forums/wikis is an option, but it's very time-intensive for the course teacher. What are some other ideas?
