Core Usage (or Adoption) Reports

Core Usage (or Adoption) Reports

At Cal State, we've had a lot of discussions around reporting and analytics.  We've taken a first stab to delineate two general areas:

a) Moodle adoption / usage acoss the institution.  We're starting with this, as it seems fundamental.

b) Moodle Analytics - e.g. course-based, assessing whether using Moodle makes a difference in student improvement.

We're working on coming up with common queries that we can use to determine usage at the a) course, b) faculty/instructor, and c) student level - e.g. "What percentage of course sections offer are using Moodle".  Simple reporting - like # of course shells in the system, or # of course shells visible, aren't accurate - because we create a course shell for every section, and visible doesn't mean really used.

What queries and reports are other institutions using for core usage metrics?  What do you consider and what thresholds do you set?

Thanks, John

We are definitely doing b, with standard entry diagnostics, mid-course and exit diagnostics.

Not sure how you could get any meaningful data on student improvement without at least a standard pre-test and post test bracketing the learning in question.

E.g. if you measure Mid-Term and Final, but the mid-term and final tests are different from one course to another (say one Algebra 1 course to another), then comparison would not really be informative.

It's a different question, but the other relationship is between usage of the LMS and student performance.  That is, do students who use the LMS more achieve a higher grade than students who use it less?  That's a very crude measure, but establishes a basis for the usage of the LMS - and is very useful to demonstrate to faculty and students.

For that, maybe add the student's grade to something like RL's Time Summary report - that report uses a calculation to estimate time spent in a course from log event frequency.

Looks interesting, Michael - does this report require ELIS or additional modules?  From that page, I saw a lot about the functionality, but not much about how to access the code or install the report ...

The reporting system includes ETL processes to de-normalize the data into a datamart, as well as indexes on various tables and other improvements to let the reports & data extraction scale for 1000000+ user sites.  That is stuff integral to ELIS, so the report itself does require ELIS.

Which is available for download here:

Or fully installed/supported/etc. from RLsonrisa.

Florida is nice, thanks - often cooler here than the rest of the country these days sonrisa.
