Strangely enough I'm only having a problem with smilies not showing up in the dialogue module. They appear in all other areas where they should.
any ideas?

Yes, neither smileys nor images in general.
GD library is OK, as I see images in other places
But I have not been able to find the cause yet,

Yes, smiley dones't show up, any idea? Only got <img /> in the source code.
