A couple of weeks ago Mikko Rusama presented a template and macro to write questions and export them into GIFT format for importing to Moodle. The template is can be downloaded from the original thread. I would like to acknowledge the seminal ideas and work of Mikko, thanks a lot!!
I have reworked the VB macros in Mikkos's document to build a similar template for work with the Open Source suite OpenOffice.
This template allows to write the questions in a comfortable way, using styles to define question types and hold track of wrong and right answers etc. There are three macros to:
- Check questions for consistency: at least 1 right answer in choice questions, even number of left/right pairs in matching questions, no blank/missing lines in questions/answers etc.
- Export questions to GIFT format.
Unlike Mikko's macros, this one allows the use question names and
preserves formatting of the texts of questions and/or answers (as HTML
tags), and special characters like greek letters and math symbols.
- Prepare for printing, hiding the indication of right/wrong questions, the feedbacks and comments. In this way, a single OOo file can serve as tech source for both on-line and written exams.
I have tested the macro with the type of questions I use regularly. Please, use it with any type of questions, test it and report here bugs or suggestions for enhancement. I am sure there is a lot of place for improving.
Within the attached zip file you will find three files: the template, an example document and a pdf file with a graphic image of the toolbar and the function of the several icons.
The template is written using OOo Writer 2.0 beta, since OOo 2.0 will be released very soon (by April). The StarBasic code will work without any problem in OOo 1.1.x, but not the toolbar . Toolbar framework is new in OOo2.0. You can import the code and assign macros to menu entries in OOo 1.1.x.
The original macros were written for an Spanish setup. I have tried to put all used messages into strings for easy translation.
