Suggested Method for Restoring Book Content from 1.9 Courses into 2.3

Suggested Method for Restoring Book Content from 1.9 Courses into 2.3

Books created in the book module plugin in versions prior to Moodle 2.3 don't remain intact after a site or course has been converted to 2.3. Here is a suggested method for retrieving and restoring book content in a 2.3 course, assuming that both the 1.9 and 2.3 versions of the course are accessible:

1. Create a backup file of just the book content from the 1.9 course
2. Put the backup file in a file repository
3. Restore the file into the appropriate 2.3 course, merging the content
4. Move the book resources in the outline if necessary

You could create all of the book backup files prior to upgrading the Moodle site if you don't intend to maintain the 1.9 site separately.

Useful, thank you, but how do you 'put the backup file in a file repository'?

Francois.

PS In trying, from the Settings block, there does not seem to be very much difference between Book administration> Restore and Course administration>Restore. sleepy

Here is another way.

In Moodle 1.9, open the book and click on the Generate IMS content package. Save the zip file it generates on your local computer. (I have a Book backup folder where I keep copies of all of mine.)

In Moodle 2.3, create a new book (with the right name) in the course/topic where you want it. After you have named it and are then ready to put text on the first page, click on Import Chapter. In the Import dialog window, click the down arrow for Type and select, Each folder represents one chapter. Then click the Choose a file button and go select the zip file you saved and upload it. Once it is uploaded, click on the Import button. After importing and linking, you will have your new complete book.

If your see that each page of the book has two copies of the title, edit the Book and selected, Custom Titles, which will turn one of them off.

AL
