ERROR: Could not instantiate mail function.
Tried to send you an email but failed!
Also, I cannot login as admin or guest.
I have taken a look at the moodle user database and everything seems fine except that the confirmation is not done because of the email.
I set up my smtp server and password during the initial setup. The setup process seems to work fine until I get my moodle homepage. I then try to login and I am taken to the homepage but the bottom of the page says your are not logged in and has the login link. I tried to creat a new user. The user is created in the user database, but the confirmation email is not received in my email inbox. I have edited the user database from email to manual on the confirmation field, but it does not work. I have tried to use the admin user, but again no login.
I am running the system as a stand-alone system. I need this to present the Moodle application to my peers.
I am receiving the "ERROR: Could not instantiate mail function" message in my logs anytime someone sends out a message on the forum. I have about 17 users in my course and the message is sent out successfully to the first 7 and then I get the error for the remaining 10. I don't know why it is happening.
I have the SMTP section blank on my Variables page, so it's using the default method to send mail.
I have had this problem for a long time. I thought it was just a version problem so I upgraded last week. Even after the update to the latest version, however, I am still getting the error. What do I do?!?
To anyone who has found this post because you are having the same issue I am:
I have stumbled upon another moodle thread that might hold one possible answer to this problem:
It sounds exactly like my predicament and so I have asked my web host and there is, indeed, a limit placed on the number of emails that can be sent out in a 10 second period! This is causing the forum mailer errors. So far my web host is offering A LOT of resistance to removing the limit. I keep sending them pleading emails and so I hope they help me. I don't know what to do if they refuse...
