Hi Greg,
you can remove the clue buttons from within Hot Potatoes when you are creating the quiz. (Options -> Configure Output -> buttons)
You can't hide the clue and hint buttons from within Moodle. The navigation buttons ("back", "index", "next") are hidden by default unless you select "Hot Potatoes Quiz buttons" for the "Navigation" setting of the quiz.
