I want to enrol students in every course in a category.

http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Category_enrolments recomends using Cohort Sync.

I checked out http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Cohort_sync and there was no help specifically for this.

What I did was:

  1. go to Site admin>courses>edit courses and I see a list of categories.
  2. For my category I click on the cohorts Icon, and I can see the list of category cohorts
  3. I created a category cohort - but there are no buttons to "enable" them.

I assumed maybe it just works, but no.

Then I tried going to the course, and enabling cohort sync enrolment plugin.  Now it works.

  1. Does this mean I have to enable this enrolment plugin in every course?  I was trying to do the thing at category level to apply to every course in the whole category, to avoid setting settings in every course?
  2. Does anyone know why the statement "Note: It is recommended that Cohort sync is used in preference to category enrolments" in http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Category_enrolments

The docs here http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Cohort_sync are a little vague, I amy see about adding something, but I wanted to be sure of my facts.

Not here to offer a solution unfortunately, but to add that this is similar to the problem I am having and to echo Derek's experience of the cohort sync documents.
