Help! Welcome email with link

Please, if you can, help me with this.  I have spent a ton of time trying (even asked in the forum) but I can't figure it out.    

Moodle 2.2 - Two scenarios I'm trying to solve:

1.  If I manually add a person and give them access to a course, how do I have Moodle send them a welcome email with a link to log in and complete the course?  Also, I assume there is a way to edit the text that is sent.  How?

2.  If I don't want to manually add a person, how do I invite a person to create a profile on my Moodle site (then I will give them access to courses)?

There is no way to do this out of the box.  There is a work around here: http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Upload_users but it is buried in the page.  I may edit it later.

2. One way: 3) send them an e-mail, 2) enable self registration and 1) have a one time enrolment key on the course.
