Shaun, awesome update as always!

I have two issues (or maybe I'm just missing something):

1. Grades for quizzes don't scroll correctly horizontally. For instance I have a quiz with about 20 items. If I go to the grades it displays the name, email, dates, and first four question points fine. If I try to scroll right to see the rest of the question points I just get blank space.

Grade view 1

Now scroll right:

Grade View 2

Issue 2:

I can't seem to find a way to insert a block into the new user drop-down menu. I just keep "Block TBC"

Block TBC

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi,

The grader table itself has a scroll bar, so you need to scroll down the list of names to the bottom of the table to see the scroller. This allows you to scroll within the confines of a fixed width page. You can set the number of students listed per page in Grader settings page, you will need to enable Editing to do this.

As for adding a Block to the dropdown box...well that is still a work in progress as far as I know, hence the Block TBC (To Be Coded?) If you want that option you need to use Aardvark Postit, but that theme does not have all the extra settings that Shaun has built into this theme.

Thanks for the TBC deciphering. As far as the grader table, there is no scroll bar. If I switch to the standard theme it's there, Aardvark or Aardvark Post-it, no scroll bar. I'm running bog-standard 2.2.2 and those themes have not been modified in any way. Any thoughts?

No grader scroll bar

That is strange...as it shows up on my version of aardvark.

Is this the grader page?

Looking at the graph..it looks more like a Report in which case it is probably needing coding.

Aardvark-Post is a clone theme, based on Aardvark, so it too will have the same problem. sad

You could try adding this to end of core.css in the themes style directory...

.pagelayout-admin #region-main .region-content .no-overflow,
.pagelayout-report #region-main .region-content .no-overflow { overflow: auto;}

Hi Mary

Just tested it myself - get the same result.  Can't test the code changes on this PC at the moment.

The only other issue that Shaun is aware of is if you switch Blocks on the CSS needs to be changed as the text (name of block) is not visible when docked.

Oh and I'd love the main page to be fixed width and all the others to be full width (like Rocket) smile

Re: Aardvark 2.2 Blackbird - RELEASED

The page is from if I go into the quiz/results/grades. However, I have the same issue if I go to any of the results pages (grades/responses/statistics) I have to download the reports if I actually want to see anything past the first 4 questions.

On the plus side, adding the suggested to my core.css fixed the problem.

THANKS!!!

One last question/fix if you'll notice from the first screenshots I posted the white text for the column headers is absolutely unreadable with the light grey column header color. Any way to fix that to be black (the text color)?

I also noticed that with the dock enabled it was a blank menu when you put something in the block.  I changed this in core.css on line 649 the 'color:#666;' so that the text for the blocks appears in the dock.  Otherwise it is white on white.

div.dockeditem_container div.dockeditem {

This may be a silly question, but when I use the Aardvark theme I have issues editing quizzes.

For instance, I add a quiz activity and then I am prompted to add questions. Great!  I add questions and click the save button.  However, not that the quiz has questions, I cannot figure out how to get back so that I can add more questions.  When viewing the quiz it only allows me to take the quiz.  If I click the quiz edit button it only allows editing of the quiz parameters and not questions.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Nevermind....   When you click the quiz Edit button you can view the "Settings" panel and edit the questions from there.  On other themes I think there were multiple ways to find the Settings panel for the quiz.  It appears that Aardvark hides the settings panel when you click on the Quiz.

I found an issue when editing quiz questions in regards to css formating.  As seen in the image, the center column was too large and appeared at the bottom of the page.  This was tested in Chrome and Firefox.

I added this style to core.css to fix it.

#page-mod-quiz-edit div.quizcontents {
clear: left;
display: block;
float: left;
width: 68%;
}

It pulls this from some other place and the width is 70% and it was too wide.

Nope, I'm using the stock version downloaded from the themes section.  I've emptied the theme cache, browser, cache, etc. to attempt to fix the issue.  Maybe just for the heck of it I should blow away the directory and re-install the theme.  I'm also getting some weird alignment issues on the login page as well...

If you mean on the site's front page, you don't need to code in a block like that.

Go to Site Administration > Front page > Front page settings and enable the "Include topic section" setting. When you go to your front page and turn editing on, you will have a section you can add things like announcements in labels or whatever in the middle at the top.

Hi Shaun,

First off, thanks for your continued dedication to making kick-ass themes -- and while I'm at it, big up to Julian and Mary for their great contributions.

I've just installed Blackbird on Moodle 2.2.3, without any immediate issues. Now, however, I note two points:

  1. The language menu does not appear anywhere.
    The box is checked in the Language settings, and in the aardvark config.php, I note both mentions of langmenu are "true".
  2. In the aardvark config.php, I set enable dock to "true" and it works.
    However, only the bottom docked block icon appears; the ones above are invisible (but still active).
    I've set the theme colour to white, but that still doesn't explain why the bottom icon is visible and the others not (see image below).
    Aardvark Blackbird invisible docked icons

Any suggestions?

Yes, but the point is it should not be set to FALSE in the first place, as an Admin can't change that on a server normally, you can I know, but other people can't.  If it was set to TRUE then an Admin can disable it in Admin settings.

The CSS styling it is coming from Base theme, so the white text of Aardvark is not showing up on the white of the docked titles, so you can't see the text.

Cheers

Hi David,

The reason the Lang menu is not displaying is that there is no PHP code added into this theme that calls the Lang menu, even though the layouts are set correctly in the theme's config.php.

As for the DOCK that too is not a feature of this theme and so there is no CSS for the dock although what you see is coming from Base theme.  But why Base theme and not Canvas theme? That is because the parent themes have been added the wrong way round in aardvark/config.php.

I'm sure Shaun is working on updating this theme soon, lets hope he fixes these.

Cheers

One thing to watch out for on this theme is the autohide.css. It's a great effect but if you allow the dropdown menus for activities and resources to use the autohide they don't work properly in IE8 or IE9 (can only select to about the 4th item down before they lose focus and you get the topic beneath)

Re: Aardvark 2.2 Blackbird - RELEASED

Hi Mary,

Thanks for the clarifications.

FWIW I confirm that the docking issue does not depend on the background colour; all colours reproduce the same error: only one docked panel icon is visible.

Re. the language menu, is it not *just* a question of copying over the code from, say, your aardvark post-it theme?

I work with multilingual groups studying multiple languages, so the language menu is a cool feature to offer users.

Yes...kind of, however, the two themes, although similar, do have very different layout files.

This is the block of code you need, but where to place it in Aardvark is your guess...

    <div class="headermenu"><?php
        if (!empty($PAGE->layout_options['langmenu'])) {
            echo $OUTPUT->lang_menu();
        }
        echo $PAGE->headingmenu
    ?></div>

You may need to 'tweek' the CSS to line it up.

I need some help on cloning this theme. I've had a go but lost the width settings on the theme in the process and as a relative Moodle newbie I would appreciate someone telling me the blinding obvious smile.

I'm trying to set up a clone of this theme so I can customise my own version. I'm following these instructions
http://docs.moodle.org/dev/Themes_2.2_how_to_clone_a_Moodle_2.2_theme
and have renamed all instances of 'aardvark' in all the relevant files. But I'm not sure what to do when it comes to setting up a parent array and deleting existing css files as this theme differs from the one used in the instructions - afterburner - in that Aardvark doesn't list a whole lot of css files.

I have set the parent theme array in my customised theme's config.php file to
$THEME->parents = array('aardvark','base','canvas')

Which css files can I delete from the style folder or can I not delete any? There are 3

autohide.css
core.css
editor.css

By deleting all 3 I lost my width setting and the background image (fish) disappeared so I'm obviously not doing something right.

Thanks for reading.

Hi,

If you are just 'cloning' it then leave the parent array as it was originally and keep all the CSS files,

You might also like to check in general.php as I have a feeling there are some references to aardvark in that file too.

In reply to Nick Varney

Re: Aardvark 2.2 Blackbird - RELEASED

by James Cracknell -

Rename Aardvark folder to what you wish to clone and then leave parents alone.  Aardvark pulls from both themes (especially if new features are added to Moodle) and then makes changes.  If you add parent 'aardvark' then you need a directory 'aardvark' to pull CSS from.  To be honest, keep it simple.

In reply to James Cracknell

Re: Aardvark 2.2 Blackbird - RELEASED

by Nick Varney -

Thanks Mary and James.

I definitely do want to keep it simple. Do I lose anything by not setting up parents? Am I going to be able to keep my cloned/cutsomised theme up to date with updates to the aardvark theme for instance?  I thought that by setting up parent arrays this allowed me to do this but I may have got the wrong end of the stick completely here.

Re: Aardvark 2.2 Blackbird - RELEASED

If you want your theme to take advantages of any CSS updates from Aardvark theme, then make aardvark a parent in the way you had it before, and keep the oroginal theme in yout themes directory so that your theme will read the aardvark css if needed. You can keep the css files in your theme as this has the settings values attached to it for the width and other settings, which I had forgotten about. The tutorial is for Afterburner and that theme has all the settings in afterburner_settings.css whereas Aardvark all the css is in core.css.

Make sure too that all your other files have been checked for instances of aardvark and change them to your new theme name. That done all should be well.

If you are logged in as Admin go to ...

Site Administration > Appearance > Themes in this subdirectory you will see a list of theme names. Aardvark is the top one. Click on this link and you will find the place where you can select the 'hover' color that is called into the CSS in that rule.

The TBC block itself doesn't have a colour set, but as James says you can set one by adding one to the css

.profilebar_block {background-color: #ff0000;} for example

If you mean the whole of the profile drop down area, then this is actually an image and the css can be found using firebug and shows

#profilebar {
    backgroundurl("image.php?theme=aardvark&image=profile%2Fblack95&component=theme") repeat scroll 0 0 transparent;
}

The height of the footer can also be found using firebug - which also tells you that this rule is at line334 of core.css in the aardvark theme
#footerinner {
    border-top1px solid #CCCCCC;
    color#999999;
    font-size10px;
    height150px;
    margin-leftauto;
    margin-rightauto;
    padding10px;
}

I would strongly recommend firebug (or one of the equivalent tools for Chrome/IE) as essential for anyone looking into making changes to or developing themes - it has become an invaluable tool for me since Mary Evans first recommended it to me when I was starting to experiment with themes big grin It is very easy to use and an essential for finding those rules hidden in the css of the theme, the parent themes or the core/yui.

Marianela,

Add this to  your custom CSS:

#homeicon a.homeiconlink {
max-width: 185px;
}

If that doesn't work, add in BOTH the max-width and width elements (because something needs to overwrite the existing max-width one) like so:

#homeicon a.homeiconlink {
max-width: 185px;
width: 185px;

Just upgraded my dev site to 2.3 and noticed an issue with the Book module (also affects Page but less noticeable)

When creating a book due to the page layout I can't see the menu to add a chapter as Book \ Page use the full width content region with no side blocks...

Fix is probably a simple code change - is it in the layouts.php? Or has the block gone in the dock (that I haven't enabled yet)

Btw for the TBC block I've took a different approach and manually coded what I want into the profileblock.php file... initially I put my Live@Edu Office Web Apps in there but that might end up being either for Mahara or Office 365 depending on which way things go...

Hi Luciana,

I am not sure what Gerrard means about the Book module, however the fix he is talking about in the above post, is probably the fix you need so that you can get the book module menu to show up.

The theme/aardvark/config.php is all wrong and has many errors for the page layouts, some pages have NO blocks at all so the page you need to have a sidemenu has none.

I have atteched the corrected config.php for you so that you can use this in place of your aardvark/config.php

If you have any problems with it please let me know.

Hi Mary,

I can't thank you enough! It worked great smile

I'm dealing with a dilema at the moment. We need a wider course page area and I'm using the fluid version of this theme, but it scares me a little bit that it is an "experimental" thing. What would you recomend? Keep using the fluid version or  increasing the width of the fixed width version? (which I don't know how to accomplish).

Thank you so much! smile

The only difference is that the setting to use Fluid width, sets the width of the containers in the CSS,  the same containers you would need to change if you wanted to change it manually. So its really the same thing.

There is nothing to be scared about. The fact it is classed as experimental is that Shaun always works with fixed widths so this was an experiment for him to try something different than he was used to.

The setting works...stop worrying! LOL

blush Thank you Mary!!

Could I ask you another thing. In Moodle 2.3 we are forced to have section names e course pages (either the default text or another that we choose to insert). I usually design my own section image headers (I don't like to use simple text), but I know that there are some other teachers in my school that use text.

This is to say that the previous configuration worked better for us. You only add the section title if you want to.

I mentioned this here: http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=205865#p897964 and Gavin told me that the solution might be in the theme CSS. Would you please help me on this? I think that his code will eliminate the section simple text titles completely.

Thank you so much!

P.S.- I think that after all this I'm owing you, at least, a bottle of Oporto Wine wink

Luciana, uma garrafa de vinho do Porto seria muito apreciada! smile

Although the Main Section name does not show even if you write one in the box provided, it vanises 10000px to the left with the .autohide CSS. However this shouldnot stop you creating your own title, as you can do so in the Topic summary as I did. See the image below...

buttons

To achive this I added an image and set it up so the picture was at the top and the  text underneath.

Is this what you mean? Or were you talking about something else?

Hi! smile

I'll need your address for the bottle wink Oh.. and nice Portuguese. Didn't know you spoke/writte wink

I was talking about the other sections

Imagine I want to do something like this (this is a prc sc from Moodle 2.2.3):

I can have section headers as text and as image.

Basicaly what we need is this:

The "Section name" or the "default section name" fields should only be used by the "Navigation" block, but not shown in any section header.

Is this possible?

Thank you so much! wink

Hi Luciana,

I'll test this out and see if I can achieve what you want to do. You can certainly hide the header text using CSS but I am not sure if this hides the navigation title as well.  I'll take a look and let you know.

I'll be right back in a little while...

Hi Mary,

Yup that was what I was trying to get at, the book module needs the side block to be able to add new chapters (tutor role) or navigate the book (student role). Will try your config.php to see which other pages need fixing smile

Hi Gerrard,

There were a lode of page layouts that had been left off, which I fixed in that config.php. I am not sure why they were left off originally, as most pages need the left block at least, unless they are designated content-only by default. The problem also is that the docking module is disabled in the Aardvark theme. Anyway I enabled it so if you want to use the DOCK you can now. I also fix a small error in the order the parent themes were listed, CANVAS should come first followed by BASE so you will see that in the config.php too.

If you think other things need fixing please let me know and I'll do them if I have time.

Hi Mary,

Thank you smile The section names are no longer displayed. The only problem remaining is that there is a white space. Let me show you in the image below:

Could this be corrected? The ideal situation would be for all section headers to behave exactly as the main section header.

I'm sorry that I'm taking so much time and patience from you. Thank you smile

That is good, because this means that the code I gave you with visibility: hidden just hides the element and whereas if you change visibility: hidden; and put display: none; instead then the space goes too...or should! LOL

So try this instead...

.course-content .section-summary .section-title { display: none;}

.section .content h3.sectionname { display: none;}

Re: Aardvark 2.2 Blackbird - RELEASED

I'm doing the happy dance now wink Worked like a charm!

There is a problem with the template itself though. If the course category name is to long, the course short name won't show up in breadcrumb. Let me show you:

When the course category name is not too long, it works fine. I've searched for something I could change in terms of breadcrumb width, but can't find it. Could the course short name be hiden, because of the breadcrumb width?

Since we'r at it, I'de like to maintain the small arrows between paths blush, but that it something I can live with if its too much to ask blush

Thank you so much!

Re: Aardvark 2.2 Blackbird - RELEASED

by Luciana Oliveira -

I don't know if this helps. While I was trying to add the arrows (which I managed to do :D ) the course short name showed up.

Changed core.css:

div#jcontrols_button span.arrow.sep {
font-size:10px; (previous 1px)
color:#ababab;
display:inline-block;
width:10px; (previous 16px) --> I think that this is what made the course short name have room to show in breadcrumb)
}

But it's only possible to have course short names with 8 characters long, in this particular case.

I tried to do this, but it did not work:

.breadcrumb {
text-transform:uppercase;
font-weight:700;
font-size:0.9em;
margin-left:7px;
width:900px;
}

Width is not going to do anything as width is auto in this case. However you could try

.navbar .breadcrumb {
    overflow: auto;
}

This may add a scrollbar underneath the navbar.

Re: Aardvark 2.2 Blackbird - RELEASED

Hi Mary! smile

Thank you! It really is not a good solution. I ended up decreasing the breadcrumb text size to make it fit. I think this is the only thing I can do.

Changed:

.breadcrumb {
text-transform:none;
font-weight:500;
font-size:0.75em;
margin-left:7px;
}

So far there is only one problem left to solve. In the dropdown user menu, the "My privat files" option calls the URL "http://.../moodle23/user/filesedit.php" and I get "URL Not found".

This menu:

Maybe in v2.3 the URL changed and this needs to be updated.

In aardvark/layout/profileblock.php

change this...

<?php echo $CFG->wwwroot; ?>/user/filesedit.php">

to this...

<?php echo $CFG->wwwroot; ?>/user/files.php">

However, I have found a lot of little coding errors in that profileblock.php which I am not happy about. This theme needs revising.

But the fix above will take you to your "My Files" page smile

"This theme needs revising." --> I was affraid of this sad

I just found another thing.

In the some of the "grades" views, there is no page behing the table of grades. This happens in "grader report", "outcomes report", "overview report" and "user report". The other views seam to work fine.

Let me show you:

This is not normal, is it?

To get round this for the moment, go to Appearance > Theme settings and enable Allow theme by URL  and SAVE changes

Then add this after you main site URL...

For example: http://localhost/moodle/?theme=standard

This will brings up Standard theme so Teachers can edit grades etc. only the person viewing the URL like this sees Standard theme everyone else sees the normal Aardvark theme.

I'm halfway through revising it.

Can you send me your email in a 'message' and I'll email you a copy as soon as it is working?

Thanks

Since you are revising it, do you remember the old aardvark theme where the "numberofcourse" was aligned to the right in the course category table?

This one:

I think this increases the legibility of categories. Its just a sugestion though smile

I have redownloaded the theme as advised after experiencing problems with the Activity Picker appearing under the Header.

Still got a problem - see attached screenshot.

Also, when logging in the first time the login initiates a download of the background image, then hit login again and moodle authenticates the user - really weird.

I'm using this theme, but I have a problem: I´m using an LDAP data base to enroll users, my database put in the firsname field the firstname and the lastname (all together). So in the profile block I see de fisrtname and the lastname, but i can`t see all the name in just one line in the profile block, instead i see two lines and the second line it`s over the "turn editing on" button, so when professors cliks on the "turn edit on" button, they actually display the profile block.

You know if I can edit any css to give more space for the name in the profile block?

Thankyou

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but I can't seem to find the info needed.

1) the Add resource menu, is there anyway to make this appear on top of the header? On some small screens it appears under the header (I have made the header bar taller

2) TBC Block - how do I insert something into this box eg. If I want to add in create GoogleApps icons for example

3) Footer - in the previous Aardvark I added our school logos and affiliations to the footer bar - can I still do this?

Thanks in advance, great theme by the way!!

Re: Aardvark 2.2 Blackbird - RELEASED

by Nicholas Bullen -

I love the theme (we used Aardvark previously, and this one is even better!).

However, we have come across a slight issue regarding the Edit profile link option in the dropdown menu.

When a user clicks on the Edit profile link, they receive an error message which states "Sorry, but you do not currently have permissions to do that (Update user profiles)", and cannot edit their profile.

However, if the user goes to edit their profile via Settings > My profile settings > Edit profile, then they have no problems and can edit their profile.

I have checked permissions for users (Student and Tutor roles and Authenticated user) and they are set to allow editing of their own profile.

I noticed that the link goes to the following page: user/editadvanced.php

Any ideas about what is going on and how to fix?

Thanks!

Nic

Re: Aardvark 2.2 Blackbird - RELEASED

Hi Nic,

You will need to replace the whole of that Edit profile URL section in the profileblock.php with this...

<a href="<?php echo $CFG->wwwroot.'/user/edit.php?id='.$USER->id.'&amp;course='.$COURSE->id ?>"><li><img src="<?php echo $OUTPUT->pix_url('profile/editprofile', 'theme')?>" />&nbsp;<?php echo get_string('editmyprofile');?></li></a>

The part I have highlighted is the part you need to actually replace, but because it is a little sensitive it may be just as easy to replace the whole of the section from <a to /a> like so...

<a href="<?php echo $CFG->wwwroot.'/user/edit.php?id='.$USER->id.'&amp;course='.$COURSE->id ?>"><li><img src="<?php echo $OUTPUT->pix_url('profile/editprofile', 'theme')?>" />&nbsp;<?php echo get_string('editmyprofile');?></li></a>

All you need to do is open aardverk/layout/profileblock.php using Notepad as this is the safest Text Editor for small changes like this.

Dont forget to SAVE it after, and then you can upload back to the server.

By the way I found that in the old Aardvark in Moodle 1.9 smile

Cheers

Hi,

I am having a problem with adding Resources and/or Activities to a course when using Aardvark 2.2

Attached a screenshot.

When I move the mouse over the dropdown, which encroaches upon section #2, the dropdown closes and section 2 becomes highlighted. At the moment, the only solution I have found is to use the keyboard to select an item from the dropdown list.

This happens in IE9, but is not a problem in Google Chrome.

Any ideas on a fix? Could it be a z-index problem in either the 'content' or 'section' class?

Thanks.
